Walter Matthau, actor of both stage and screen, died Saturday morning of a heart attack.

Matthau, 79, was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m., shortly after being brought into St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, according to reports from the AP.

Matthau's performance in "The Fortune Cookie" won him the Academy Award as best supporting actor of 1966.

His TV credits include appearances on "Playhouse 90" and "DuPont Show of the Week." Matthau also starred on the short-lived series "Tallahassee 7000."

But it was his role in "The Odd Couple" that established Matthau as a star. In 1965 he appeared in New York as messy sportswriter Oscar Madison in Neil Simon's play.

Matthau repeated the role in the 1968 film, with Jack Lemmon as Felix. They reprised their roles 30 years later in the 1998 film "Odd Couple II."

Matthau's other films include "Cactus Flower," "Plaza Suite," "Pete 'n' Tilly," "Casey's Shadow," "California Suite," "Little Miss Marker," "I Ought to Be in Pictures," "Pirates," and "Dennis the Menace."

He was most recently seen on screen with Meg Ryan, Diane Keaton and "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow in the film "Hanging Up," released in February.
